DataBar Bar Codes are often used to label fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables. They contain information such as the lot number or the expiration date of an item, as well as other attributes used at the point of sale, such as its weight.
There are several types and, often, DataBar Barcodes are used in retail and can be read with laser scanners.
The GS1 DataBar Bar Code, formerly known as Reduced Space Symbology, was renamed GS1 DataBar to avoid confusion with the popular RSS XML Feed technology, which is widely used on the Web.
It was officially created in 2010 by GS1, the institution that manages the Bar Code standards in the world. Currently, it has the support of the main points of sale (POS).
The GS1 Databar evolved in the market thanks to the need to be able to identify other elements of perishable products such as expiration date or weight. Multiple products in the fresh category are currently identified with Databar accompanied by the PLU Code.
One of its benefits is that it allows reading in any direction, that allows a safe reading with scanners at the points of sale. Additionally, it is capable of storing the Product Code GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) or GCN Coupon Code. However, you can not store other data or information.
It has the same characteristics of an Omni-Channel DataBar, that is to say: it can be read in any direction and is able to store the GTIN Product Code or GCN Coupon Code, can not store other data or information. Its quality is that it divides the information in two levels, that allows to reduce the size of the Bar Code.
It is able to store the GTIN Product Code or GCN Coupon Code, and also stores other relevant product information such as the expiration date or the production lot. Each element of information is stored in a level of the Bar Code.
In a single data level, this Code is capable of storing the GTIN Product Code or GCN Coupon Code, and relevant product information such as the expiration date or the production lot.
