    Where is it used?

     

    The EAN or European Article Number, better known as GTIN 13 and the UPC or Universal Product Code, are the most commonly used identifiers for product identification. Currently more than 100 million codes of products coexist in the floors of sale of the world.

     

    History

     

    The EAN code was created by the EAN Association and was adopted by more than 100 countries to identify Consumer products. Its counterpart UCC or Uniform Code Council administered UPC codes, mostly used in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. In 1985, both organizations came together to administer the Bar Codes worldwide, forming the GS1 organization.

    This organization brought multiple benefits, in particular that with a GS1 Bar Code can be exported to any country without having to change it. Prior to GS1, the manufacturers had products with UPC codes and with EAN codes, depending on the client's location they sent one merchandise or another.

     

    Types and structure of EAN / UPC

    It is a Bar Code that can be read from any address, it has twelve digits and you can easily identify it by always starting with a zero.

    UPC-A-Barcode-Example

    It is a Bar Code that can be read in any direction, has 8 characters, is used exclusively in small packaging products and is characterized by starting with zero.

    UPC-E-Barcode-Example

    It is an omnidirectional barcode and corresponds to the standard created by the EAN association, it is also known as EAN 13 and serves to identify consumer products, it is composed of a country code, a company code, a product code and a check digit.

    GTIN-13-Barcode-Example

    It is a Bar Code created specifically for small packaging products where a traditional 13-digit code is not viable due to the size and size of the packaging.
